Drywall Texture Matching in Boulder, CO

The most technically demanding part of any drywall repair is matching the existing texture. We get it right.

Why Texture Matching Is the Hard Part

You can patch a hole. The harder task — the one that separates professionals from handymen — is making the patch invisible. When light rakes across a wall from a window or lamp, any texture inconsistency shows up immediately. A patch that’s smoother than the surrounding wall, or textured with the wrong tool, glows in raking light.

Texture matching requires evaluating the existing texture, selecting the right application method and material consistency, applying test patches, adjusting, and committing only when the match is right. We’ve developed this skill across hundreds of Boulder-area repair jobs over years of work in the region.

Common Textures in Boulder Homes

Boulder’s housing stock spans several eras, each with characteristic textures:

Orange Peel The most common texture in Boulder homes built from the 1970s through the 1990s. Applied by spray, it creates a surface that resembles the skin of an orange — small, rounded bumps with a relatively consistent pattern. Variables that affect matching: droplet size, PSI, distance, and compound viscosity.

Knockdown A hand-applied texture created by spraying compound and then flattening (“knocking down”) the peaks before they fully dry. Common in custom homes from the 1980s–2000s. Matching knockdown requires judgment about timing and the size and distribution of the flattened areas.

Skip Trowel A hand-applied texture that creates irregular, overlapping flat areas separated by exposed paper. Often found in higher-end homes. Matching requires experience with the trowel technique specific to how the original was applied.

Smooth (Level 5) Some Boulder homes — particularly newer construction and renovated spaces — have smooth walls with no texture. Matching a smooth wall after repair requires skim coating the patch, feathering well beyond the edges, and sanding carefully to eliminate any ridge.

Popcorn / Acoustic Primarily found on ceilings. Matching popcorn texture on a repaired section is possible, though full ceiling replacement or refinishing often produces a better result. See our Popcorn Ceiling Removal page for options.

Our Texture Matching Process

When we evaluate a repair site, we assess:

  • The existing texture type and scale
  • The application method (spray vs. hand vs. roller)
  • The compound type and finish coat color (which affects how texture reads under paint)
  • The light conditions in the room

Before applying texture to the visible repair, we test our match on a hidden area — behind a door, inside a closet — and compare under the same lighting conditions as the repair wall. We adjust before touching anything visible.

When to Repaint

Texture matching restores the wall’s surface. However, even a perfect texture match will show through existing paint because the patched area will be a different shade of primer than the painted surrounding wall. For an invisible result, the repaired wall (or the entire room) should be repainted after texture work. We recommend this to every client — we can advise on timing and surface prep.
